New news about the film Borderlandsfilm adaptation of the famous Gearbox Software series.
Production of the live action, filming of which is underway, has announced that Edgar Ramirez (Zero Dark Thirty, Gold) was cast in the role of the film’s villain, most notably as the founder of the Atlas Corporation. For the uninitiated, the Atlas Corporation is one of the many interplanetary corporations in the series, which mainly deals with the production and distribution of weapons.
Edgar Ramirez joins the cast which already includes Cate Blanchett (Lilith), Jamie Lee Curtis (Patricia Tannis), Kevin Hart (Roland) and Jack Black (Claptrap). Eli Roth, director of Borderlandscommented on Ramirez’s entry into production:
Atlas must be a truly magnetic personality, someone with charisma and charm but that air of menace underneath it all. I’ve been a fan of Edgar since his earliest performances and he continues to amaze me with every dramatic turn. We want to create something wild, fun and very different from anything they’ve seen from Edgar before. I am so, so excited to work with him.
“The strength of Edgar’s presence and the strength of his talent as an actor make him the ideal choice to play Atlas, a character who controls the fate of so many in the Borderlands universe. It’s the perfect addition to this perfect cast “said Nathan Kahane, president of the Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.
Through Deadlinewhich gave the exclusive news, also comes the first synopsis of the film.
The story, as you can read, will not exactly trace the events of the first video game in the series, but it will still have some points in common:
In the film, Lilith (Blanchett), a notorious outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet Pandora to find Atlas (Ramirez )’s missing daughter. Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team: Roland (Hart), a former elite mercenary, now seeking redemption; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a savage pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s muscular protector; Tannis (Curtis), a scientist with obvious sanity problems; and Claptrap (Black), an ever wise robot. These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe may be in their hands, but they will fight for something more: each other.
