The goodwill of the developers was not enough: Cyberpunk 2077after an excellent start recorded in the first weeks of launch, sta reaping poor resultsand the prospects are not the brightest on the horizon.
Before discussing what we have learned in the last few hours, let’s take a small step back and remember what has happened in the last few months.
Cyberpunk 2077 is the latest video game from the creators of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, released worldwide, after many postponements, last December. Upon release, Cyberpunk 2077 recorded large numbers, in line with what the makers of CD Projekt Red expected – we are talking about one of the most expensive video games in history. However, the paradise did not last long, because the players had to deal with an at times disastrous situation of the game, especially on PS4 and Xbox One.
You will surely remember that a few days after the release, with the refunds already widely started, Sony decided to remove Cyberpunk 2077 from the PlayStation Store, and even today the game is not available for purchase on the digital platforms of the Japanese company. More troubling in all of this is that CDPR itself doesn’t know when Cyberpunk 2077 will return to the PS Store.
However, what has emerged in the last few hours is even more worrying.
In the last meeting between the heads of the Polish software house and its shareholders, transcribed in a document that you can find in full at the bottom of the article, CDPR has confirmed that a new update of Cyberpunk 2077 is coming soonalthough it looks like this will be a minor patch that will just fix some aspects of the game.
The most important details come from the purely economic and financial sphere.
In fact, from the document we learn that CDPR – and probably also Bandai Namco, publisher of Cyberpunk 2077 – reports a sharp slowdown in sales of its latest sci-fi RPG, with numbers far below previous expectations. As always happens, the sales of a game tend to progressively decrease as the months pass from the moment of the release, but in the case of Cyberpunk 2077 this decrease was much more cumbersome than forecasts.
The company, once again in the meeting, stated that it is studying possible strategies to relaunch the game and bring sales back to the desired levels, but here comes the cold shower: although one of the ideas is the return of Cyberpunk 2077 on the PS Store , the developers are not convinced of this choice.
In fact, the guys from CD Projekt Red argue that fixing Cyberpunk 2077, to make it reach the quality standard necessary for its return to the Sony digital platform, is still a long and hard (and expensive) job, and that since some time has already passed since launch of the game, its return to the PS Store would not bring particular satisfaction to sales, not even by starting a new marketing campaign – which would result in additional expenses for the study. Although the developers are therefore convinced that they can fix the game, in short, the prospect of reviewing Cyberpunk 2077 on the PlayStation Store is fading more and more.
