After years and years of speculation, rumors and wishes from fans, it’s now official: EA has announced the return of Dead Spacewith EA Motive developing the remake of the acclaimed 2008 survival horror game.
Announced during EA Play Live 2021 yesterday evening, EA has confirmed that the Motive division is currently working on a remake of Dead Space 1, due out on PS5, Xbox Series X | S and PC. No release date or official window has been provided, but the first teaser trailer offered an in-engine look at the vibe and tone that Motive is trying to capture with the remake.
You can see the announcement trailer below.
Dead Space will be rebuilt from the ground up in the Frostbite engine, with developers looking to leverage advanced SSDs, 3D audio and newer technologies from the latest console generation to bring Isaac’s journey aboard the Ishimura USG to life. Among the promised features, there will be the total absence of loading screens within the game.
IGN had the chance to exchange a few words with Roman Campos-Oriola, creative director of the remake of the series, who said that the new Dead Space will not just re-propose the entire original experience.
The intention of the team is in fact to fully exploit all that Visceral Games had thought, which also means proposing the contents originally cut from the 2008 release for various reasons.
We started with the original level design of the original Dead Space. The funny thing is that you can see some of the iterations that were done prior to shipping by the team. In the first chapter, you can see some corridors they wanted to do a certain way first, and then you can understand why they changed it for technical constraints or other reasons. So in terms of graphics, sound, gameplay, everything, we’re rebuilding all of these assets. This is not a port, we are not augmenting the texture or adding more polygons to the model. It’s really about rebuilding all these elements, shooting all the animations, etc.
Even the story, Campos-Oriola admits, could undergo some slight changes to better remember what the future of the franchise was, even if the canon will be maintained.
For us, the basis is the story of Dead Space 1. So, by default, this is the fee. But then there are some improvements we want to make to that story.
