Now it’s official: well in advance of the latest announcements, Activision confirmed that Infinity Ward is working on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2which will be released by the end of 2022.
Rumors have been circulating for months that COD 2022, the game in the shooter series to be launched later this year, would be a sequel to the hugely successful Modern Warfare of 2019, capable of relaunching the brand after very problematic years. On more than one occasion, the reports also stated that the software house was also working on a brand new version of Warzone which would be based on classic locations such as Favela.
The news of the development of Warzone 2 was confirmed a few days ago by Activision, while today another confirmation arrives regarding the premium game which, we recall, will also be released on PlayStation despite the acquisition of Activision by Microsoft.
The news was in fact confirmed by the developers themselves a little while ago, with Pat Kellyhead of the co-studio of Infinity Wardwho released the information during a call with the press, content creators and developers of Raven Software.
The developers have not discussed the game’s launch window, which according to various insiders may be anticipated due to Vanguard’s sub-expectations, however we already have some interesting details about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
COD MW2 in 2022, the first official details
Kelly told the press that it was pretty obvious that Infinity Ward was working on the Modern Warfare sequel after the huge success achieved in 2019, with the game it sold over 30 million copies.
MW2 could recover some of the most popular locations of the original game, such as Favela and Terminal, then re-proposed in other chapters of the franchise. On this, however, Kelly did not go into details, but then focused on a very important technical detail.
The game will in fact be built on a brand new enginewhich the company has been working on for years, as Infinity Ward seeks to improve the player experience across all platforms.
Kelly has not provided an exact release date for Modern Warfare 2, but has stated that the game will be released in Fall 2022.
Call of Duty: Warzone 2 with new engine
The new MW2 enginecurrently unnamed, will not be used by Infinity Ward only for the main game but will also be the basis for the construction of Warzone 2what is referred to as the new battle royale experience.
The next iteration of Warzone has been developed from the ground up alongside MW2, and this will allow the two products to work together seamlessly after turbulent years of integrating Warzone with other titles – referencing Black Ops Cold War and Vanguard of course. .
Kelly states that the new Warzone experience will be “Disruptive” it’s a “Massive evolution of Battle Royale”. Additionally, the creative director of Infinity Ward has anticipated that he will be presenting a “Incredibly ambitious sandbox mode”even if he refused to elaborate on this aspect.
No indications have been given on the Warzone 2 launch window, however we can assume that the battle royale will be released together with or shortly after the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.
