A new rumor around the new chapter of the series call of Dutyalready confirmed for the end of 2021 and which could again represent a return to the past.

Call of Duty 2021, working title of the next installment of Activision’s hit shooter series, will be available during the fourth quarter of this year. The news has already been confirmed by the American giant in its latest meeting with shareholders, reiterating that the new game will also have links with the battle royale Warzone.

We still don’t know who will be in charge of this new game in the series, although it seems, according to rumors, that Sledgehammer Games will be in charge of it.

In the last few hours, moreover, new rumors have arrived that seem to support the hypothesis of Sledgehammer Games behind the development of the new chapter, and not only: the temporal setting of Call of Duty 2021.

The well-known leaker Victor_Z posted a couple of tweets overnight suggesting that the next game in the Call of Duty series will be set during the WWII era. The tweet was accompanied by a hammer emoji – a clear reference to Sledgehammer Games – and an image of Call of Duty: WWII, the latest game developed by the software house. As you will certainly remember, Call of Duty: WWII marked the return of the shooter franchise to the World War II setting after many years, receiving a good response from the public.

A user then asked if the insider, reliable several times in the past, was referring to a possible new world war to explore, a hypothetical WW3. The leaker reiterated that the reference was to World War II by replying to the tweet – moreover, the theme of a hypothetical World War III would be all too similar to that of the Modern Warfare reboot, a storyline that will almost certainly be Infinity Ward to continue.

Obviously, this is just a rumor for now and it hasn’t been confirmed by Activision, so take it with a grain of salt. As mentioned, the insider has proven to be reliable several times in the past, especially for the Call of Duty franchise – among its latest most apt predictions, we remember the reveal of Black Ops Cold War last summer.

We do not know if the new COD could be considered a sort of spin-off of Call of Duty: WWII, but it is still too early to make such considerations. The reveal of the new game in the series is expected to arrive in late spring, or early summer at the latest.

If the rumors are confirmed, it will be the second Call of Duty set in World War II developed by Sledgehammer Games. The software house also took care of Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare in 2015, the first game of the futuristic era of the franchise.
