Although the situation has definitely improved in the last few weeks, when compared to the first 2 months after the launch of the new generation consoles, the shortage of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S will continue for quite some timewith the videogame market once again having to deal with the pandemic.

Foxconn, the world’s leading electronics manufacturer, said it expects the global shortage of computer chips to last until the second quarter of 2022. Foxconn is the largest provider of many technology companies including Google, Sony and Microsoft, and the Limited stocks of PS5 and Xbox Series X are mainly due to the shortage of chips, the production of which was put to the test last year due to the global Coronavirus pandemic.

It follows that even the supply of consoles, far from the numbers that Sony and Microsoft expected until just over a year ago, could be limited at least until the middle of 2022.

The main cause of this is obviously the pandemic, which has affected numerous organizations including those that produce semiconductors. The pandemic caused factories to be closed, including many manufacturing plants, which in turn resulted in limited production of graphics cards by companies such as AMD and Nvidia. Both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S consoles use AMD GPUs, and the ripple effect is therefore also reflected on the new generation systems of the two giants.

Foxconn president, Young Liusaid a Nikkei Asia that the company will likely ship 10% fewer products than previously expected due to the shortage of computer chips. Another report mirrored Foxconn’s expectation that the shortage will last until 2022, possibly even mid-next year. The report also specifies that demand for computer chips is currently 10% to 30% higher than output, and between limited supply and high demand for graphics cards, the shortage will continue for at least a year.

To make people understand the gravity of the situation, GameRant says Sony, Microsoft and 15 other large companies, including the US Chamber of Commerce, have asked the Biden administration for help with an investigation into the supply of semiconductors, which has already begun and will be monitored for about three months.

Regardless of the outcome of the investigation, the situation for PS5 and Xbox Series X | S will not be resolved anytime soon, and the PC market will also be affected by the consequences of the Coronavirus.
