As reported Variety exclusive, Sony gave the green light to the television adaptation of the series Twisted Metalone of the historic PlayStation IPs of the 90s.
Sony Pictures Television e PlayStation Productionsthe Sony label that aims to bring the video game intellectual properties of the Japanese giant to the small and large screen, are developing a TV series based on Twisted Metal, a saga of vehicle fighting games, the first of which has been released in 1995 on the company’s first console.
The news of a television adaptation of Twisted Metal is not new – already in 2019 the company has declared its interest – but only today we learn that Sony has officially given the green light.
The new series is described as an action comedy, based on an original version of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The two are well known for the genre in question, having curated the scripts for such hits as Deadpool And Zombieland.
“‘Twisted Metal’ is one of the most beloved PlayStation franchises “said Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions. “We are thrilled to have such an exceptional team working to bring this iconic game to life for fans.”
The Twisted Metal TV series joins the previously announced PlayStation Productions projects, which include the Uncharted prequel film with Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg (postponed to 2022 due to the Coronavirus) and the television adaptation of The Last of Us which will be curated by HBO together with Naughty Dog, whose actors for the main roles of Joel and Ellie have been known for a few days.
Michael Jonathan Smith, who most recently wrote and produced Cobra Kai, will be the executive producer of the series and will also be the writer along with Reese and Wernick. Will Arnett (Arrested Development, A Series of Unfortunate Events) will executive produce through his production company Electric Avenue alongside Artists First’s Marc Forman and Peter Principato. PlayStation Productions’ Qizilbash and Carter Swan will also executive produce, as will PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst.
Glenn Adilman, executive vice president of Sony Pictures Television, said:
We love Twisted Metal in all its twisted madness. Michael Jonathan Smith has created an action-packed and brilliantly entertaining adaptation and we are grateful for the support of Rhett, Paul, Will and our PlayStation friends.
