Treyarch explains why they made the Black Ops Cold War Zombies easter eggs easier

All Game News

Fans of the Zombies mode of Call of Duty are (finally) having bread for their teeth thanks to the latest updates of Black Ops Cold Warbut there is one element the community continues to argue about: why have easter eggs become so simple compared to the past?

Without detracting from the main missions of Die Maschine and Firebase Z, it is clear that the complexity and magnificence of famous easter eggs such as Shadows of Evil, Der Eisendrache and Gorod Krovi is far away.

Why did Treyarch decide to make them easier? A recent interview with IGN allows us to shed some light on the matter, and apparently the explanation is not that far from what we have been thinking since the release of the last chapter of the shooter series.

Corky Lehmkuhl, creative director of Treyarch Studio, explained to the microphones of IGN India because Zombies easter eggs have been made easier for Black Ops Cold War. The main reason is the search for as much involvement as possible towards the community, given that many players have never completed the easter eggs of the previous games:

Less than two percent of gamers were actually seeing that stuff [gli easter egg, ndr] unless it was shown on Youtube. In this project, we actually set out to make easter eggs more accessible or what we call ‘the main quest’. There are some secondary Easter eggs that are still a little dark and you’ll have to work hard to find them, but for the main mission we just wanted more players to experience it.

One of the main problems was the discrepancy between the effort required to develop the easter eggs and the actual response from the community. While completing an easter egg previously required commitment and hours of hard teamwork, Treyarch’s core mission development took a lot of weeks, and the developers weren’t getting adequate feedback.

The decision, says Lehmkuhl, had the desired effects, because with Black Ops Cold War there are now many more players who have tried their hand at completing a Zombies easter egg for the first time:

If you watch YouTube now or Reddit, a lot of people are completing their first Easter Egg, ever – and have been with the franchise for all ten, twelve years. So yeah, we’ve definitely made it a priority to make the easter eggs less mysterious and make sure the passages make sense with the storytelling. They are still challenging, but they are not as crazy as they used to be.
